Blackpool Go For It! November 9, 2007

Year 10 Applied GCSE business students went to Blackpool Pleasure Beach (BPB) yesterday to receive a lecture about BPB as a business. They were lucky enough to also have one of the main shareholders in attendence which really helped bring the presentation to life.
Students learnt the fundamentals about what is involved in running one of Britains largest tourist attractions and keeping it at the top. They were also investigated some of the external issues that impacted and will impact on the business. An interesting topic of discussion was the recent failure to attract the casino development.

The Year 12’s start their share dealing careers in a turbulent market!
The students (and teachers) apear to have made long term investments rather than think about short term gains for the time being. Mr Cowper explained “Well it’s a marathon not a sprint!” as the Business Studies Teacher team ‘Teachers in the Tower’ are placed a respectable but mediocre mid table position.
However, some teams are ahead of the professional stockbroker who also takes part in the challenge.

Year 12 go share crazy! October 26, 2007
Posted by cre8tor in Enterprise, Extra Curricular, General.add a comment
Its going share crazy with over 25 per cent of students in Year 12 entering a share trading competition to potentially win a trip to New York and plenty of smaller prizes over the next few months.
Portfolio Challenge is a UK wide investment game for students with a top prize of a trip to New York. On top of that, both you and your school/college get prize money to spend as well – bonus! There are also other prizes on offer throughout the challenge. Teachers can also try and beat their students in phase one of the Challenge (but they won’t be eligible for the prizes).
What does the Challenge involve?
The Portfolio Challenge is designed for teams of four students and has two distinct phases:
- Phase One: Using this website, invest a virtual £100,000* in a set of stocks between 5 November 2007 and 29 February 2008 and watch your wealth grow.
Each month, the most improved team will be rewarded with a prize (only one prize per team). - Phase Two: The top 20 teams from each region with the best performing portfolios as of 29 February 2008 will be invited to attend the regional finals in mid-March 2008. Teams will be given a series of questions and the top two teams from each region will be invited to the National Final in late April.
So will a team of Year 12’s be on their way to New York in 2008 we’ll have to wait and see. Watch this space for latest news and league positions!

On Thursday 18th October 2007 Year 10 students took part in an Enterprise Day. Students were split into company teams ranging from BAE Systems to Sony.
Scenario
The Djibouti government after years of civil war and recent discovery of huge gas and oil reserves are ready to spend big to improve the infrasture of the country.
The 11 companies have been invited to discuss customer requirements, negotiate contracts, then produce the items on time and to the required specifications as outlined by the contract.
Successful day
The feedback from students was exceptionally positive with many enterprising skills being developed throughout the day. There was a big focus on feedback, communication, financial capability, risk taking and organisation.
The short video provides highlights of the day:
